Tis indeed sad. Although I haven't read an Eddings since I was about fifteen and consider his works pretty far from the kind of thing I like to read/write now, I still remember the enjoyment I derived from reading them at the time.
Belgariad was the first fantasy I read outside of Tolkien and showed me that it doesn't have to be boring. The Mallorean was the first series I ever had to wait to be published and was constantly at the book store or library trying to find out when the next one would be in.
I have not read he Dreamers series or the Althalus stand alone but I have a soft spot for all his other books with High Hunt introducing me to the idea of swinging - woot! ;-)
I agree it's sad. Was he still writing?
