Orbit have announced that Stan Nicholls' Orcs novel - having already sold nearly 1 million copies worldwide - will now be published in the United States.
The novel takes a different approach to the usual portrayal of orcs as vicious and bloodthirsty killing-machines, treating them with more compassion.
The US artwork is to the left. Looks like Orbit are also embracing the idea of more 'mature' covers so as to appeal more to non-genre readers. I think the cover is pretty cool personally. Expect Orcs to surface in September.

Cover looks good. Creepy, but realistic. Maybe I will look for a copy of it when I'm in Toronto next week at the World's Biggest Bookstore (where they sell UK/CAN books that aren't available in the US). I love Canada.
Yeah, I think realism was definitely what the publisher was shooting for. And it's a bit less genre specific than the UK cover.
It's a pretty smart cover. It still will appeal to genre fans, but has a matured as a genre cover. I think Orbit have a similar cover ethos to Solaris -- as in selling to genre fans but making books look more modern. This is much better than the UK edition. It's definitely hooked on the Lord of the Rings vibe...
I like the UK cover, but I think this US cover is more of a bold statement. And yeah, it'll appeal to genre fans but possibly also to a more mainstream audience.
Great cover. The book didn't live up to it, for me. I like your blog. I'll have to remember to post a link to it when something relevant comes up. Thanks, and keep it up.
