Cover art for MMPB of City of Ruin

As you'd expect with a MMPB cover it's pretty commercial, but there's no doubt the art is very nice indeed. Brynd is suitably rugged (I never really pictured him like this, but it somehow seems right). I like it a lot more than the paperback cover for Nights of Villjamur, which I wasn't a big fan of.

I've got to be honest. I would buy either of the hardcover editions (UK/US), but there is no way in hell I would buy the MMPB. It looks absolutely dreadful, almost like a Harlequin Romance mated with and Urban Fantasy novel and got spat out in the regular fantasy section...

What was wrong with the hardcover cover art?

(I should note that I already own the hardcover, but the point still stands.)

The hardback artwork is not nearly commercial enough for the MMPB release. The bulk of sales will be of the MMPB, so the publisher needs the cover to be as appealing as possible, and the simple fact is that most people like covers with characters on them, brandishing weapons. I love the hardcover too, but this is a much better bet for the paperback release.

That cover is awful. I'm glad I picked up the HC.

I read that as appalling, because that's what that cover is. It's just so awful... there aren't words.
